Why HPCL Cutoff Is Hard to Predict
HPCL does not release official cutoffs. The expected ranges circulating in forums come from candidates who self-reported their scores after selection/rejection. This makes the data directional, not exact.
Key factors that shift HPCL cutoff each cycle: (1) number of vacancies per branch, (2) paper difficulty in that year, (3) total applicants in that branch. A harder paper drops the cutoff; fewer vacancies push it up.
Expected CBT Cutoff by Branch — General Category
| Branch | Expected Range | Competition Level |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanical | 68–74% | Very High (highest applicants) |
| Chemical | 67–73% | High |
| Electrical | 66–72% | High |
| CS / IT | 65–71% | High (growing fast) |
| Civil | 63–69% | Moderate |
Category-wise Cutoff Estimates
Based on previous cycles and typical reservation relaxation patterns:
These are CBT-stage cutoffs only. Final merit (after GD + Technical PI + HR PI) may differ. Strong interview performance can compensate for a borderline CBT score.
| Branch | General | EWS | OBC | SC | ST |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mechanical | 68–74% | 65–71% | 62–68% | 55–61% | 50–56% |
| Electrical | 66–72% | 63–69% | 60–66% | 53–59% | 48–54% |
| Chemical | 67–73% | 64–70% | 61–67% | 54–60% | 49–55% |
| Civil | 63–69% | 60–66% | 57–63% | 50–56% | 45–51% |
| CS / IT | 65–71% | 62–68% | 59–65% | 52–58% | 47–53% |
What Drives HPCL Cutoff Higher Than Other PSUs?
- ▸HPCL brand value: consistently ranked top 3 most-preferred PSU by engineering students
- ▸CTC: One of the highest in the sector — ₹14–16 LPA joining CTC for E1 grade
- ▸4-stage selection: CBT → GD → Tech PI → HR PI filters candidates at every stage
- ▸Relatively small vacancies: typically 150–300 total across all branches
- ▸No GATE required: opens applications to all B.Tech students, inflating the pool massively
How to Score Above the Cutoff
- ▸Technical section is 50% of the paper (85/170 Q): prioritise top 5 subjects in your branch
- ▸Aptitude + Reasoning: 35.3% combined — winnable with 2 weeks of dedicated practice
- ▸English: 14.7% — full marks possible if you are comfortable with reading comprehension
- ▸Accuracy over attempts: -0.25 negative marking means wrong answers actively hurt. Target 85–90% accuracy on attempted questions
- ▸Aim for 75%+ total to be safe in General category across all branches
Tip
HPCL frequently tests industrial application of concepts (refinery context for ME/CH, transformer testing for EE). Standard GATE-style derivations appear less frequently — the paper rewards practical understanding.
After CBT: The GD and PI Round
HPCL's GD + PI carry significant weight. The CBT is a filter; the interview is where final selection happens. Aspirants with CBT scores even 5–7% below the general trend have cleared through strong interview performance. Prepare GD topics and technical fundamentals in parallel with CBT prep — do not leave them for after.
